Alginic acid is combined with other medicines to help relieve the symptoms of reflux disease (also known as "heartburn", in which food or acid from your stomach backs up into your mouth, leaving a sour or bitter taste).
Alginic acid works by forming a protective coating in the stomach to stop acid from escaping upwards thus soothing the burning pain in your chest.
Take Alginic acid exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it with food or immediately after a meal. Chew the tablet completely before swallowing. Do not swallow it whole. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have bowel obstruction as Alginic acid may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- swelling of the ankles, feet or hand
- kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Alginic acid to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
